7-Hydroxymitragynine is a terpenoid indole alkaloid from the plant Mitragyna speciosa, commonly known as Kratom. It is often referred to as ‘7-OHM. It was first described in 1994 and is a natural product derived from the mitragynine present in the Kratom leaf. It is considered an oxidized derivative and active metabolite of mitragynine. 7-OHM binds to opioid receptors like mitragynine, but research suggests that 7-OHM binds with greater potency and contributes heavily to the analgesic activity of mitragynine as a metabolite.

Mitragyna Speciosa is a botanical name for one of the world’s most popular dietary supplements, Kratom. Kratom has its origins in South Asian countries like Vietnam, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Papua New Guinea, and Borneo among others. For thousands of years this dietary supplement has been used for medicinal purposes, treating several medical conditions such as diarrhea, depression, soothing pain, enhancing moods, easing anxiety, helping with withdrawal symptoms for opioids, boosting one’s energy and many more benefits. Is 7-OH an Opiate?

7-hydroxymitragynine is not an opiate, it does have similar effects. Its similarities can lead to some confusion about how this alkaloid functions in the body. Even though 7-hydroxymitragynine behaves somewhat like an opiate, the interaction mechanisms are different.

Is it Addictive?

First and foremost, Kratom addiction is very rare and not found in responsible use.

Still, the most concerning danger is addiction, due to its misunderstood origins. Though kratom addiction is rare & in that case, usually a replacement for hard opiate use such as heroine, OxyContin etc. and not as severe as opiate addiction. Its side effects are much less severe.

Frequent use without taking regular breaks can lead to physiological dependence, so experts recommend limiting weekly intake to 4-5 days per week. Additionally, taking a full week off once every 1-2 months is equally important to give your body a break and decrease your tolerance.

Most fear surrounding kratom comes from its opiate-like traits. Even though it does interact with opioid receptors, it is different from opiates. Kratom overdose is rare; it’s unlikely to cause respiratory depression or coma, common problems from opiate overdose.

The levels of mitragynine and other alkaloids in this kratom extract are many times higher than what is contained in fresh kratom leaves, thus increasing the potency of this extract.
